My Review: 4 Stars
This book was indeed, in Georgia's own words, fabbity-fab-fab.
Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging is not the sappy teen love story you're used to. Georgia is a hilariously unreliable narrator who gives fun and witty commentary on all the hot topics of middle school: crazy parents, cute boys, and insane insecurities.
If you're looking for a swoon-worthy first-love/coming-of-age story, this book is not it. (Although that's not to say there isn't an exciting love interest...) Georgia's life is not seen through the rose colored lens of an author romanticizing their early teen years. Georgia is by all means as irrational and irresponsible as an actual middle schooler.
Georgia's diary is instead intended for readers who don't take life as seriously. Her feelings are ridiculous, shallow, and true to the cringy middle school experience. She gets frustrated, says stupid things she doesn't mean, and isn't always honest with herself about how she feels...especially about her over-the-top parents. But ultimately, Georgia's diary is a story about learning to navigate relationships of all kinds.
The story is definitely character driven and lacks some plot structure. But listening to fourteen year old Georgia call attractive older boys "sex gods" and worry about her kissing techniques is too entertaining (and relatable) to put down.
Overall: A perfect PG-13 read for fans of Bridget Jones who appreciate snide and snappy humor.
Synopsis:
There are six things very wrong with my life:
1. I have one of those under-the-skin spots that will never come to a head but lurk in a red way for the next two years.
2. It is on my nose
3. I have a three-year-old sister who may have peed somewhere in my room.
4. In fourteen days the summer hols will be over and then it will be back to Stalag 14 and Oberfuhrer Frau Simpson and her bunch of sadistic teachers.
5. I am very ugly and need to go into an ugly home.
6. I went to a party dressed as a stuffed olive.
In this wildly funny journal of a year in the life of Georgia Nicolson, British author Louise Rennison has perfectly captured the soaring joys and bottomless angst of being a teenager. In the spirit of Bridget Jones's Diary, this fresh, irreverent, and simply hilarious book will leave you laughing out loud. As Georgia would say, it's "Fabbity fab fab!"
